A Practical Guide to Abandoned Cart Recovery Calls
Abandoned-cart recovery is usually treated as an email or SMS workflow. Those channels are valuable, but a timely phone conversation can help when the cart is valuable, the product is technical, or the shopper has a specific concern preventing checkout.
The goal is not to call every abandoned cart. It is to identify the shoppers for whom a useful conversation is likely to remove real purchase friction.
Prioritize intent instead of list size
Start with segments that show a strong reason to call. Useful signals can include:
- high cart value;
- repeat or VIP customer status;
- products that commonly require explanation;
- checkout started but payment not completed;
- a recent support or product conversation;
- subscription, replenishment, or wholesale potential.
Exclude customers who have not consented to the relevant outreach, numbers on applicable suppression lists, and segments where a call would feel disproportionate to the purchase.
Give the caller the complete cart context
The representative or AI agent should see the customer, products, variants, cart value, purchase history, campaign guidance, and any approved offer before the call connects.
That context keeps the conversation focused. The caller can answer questions about fit, delivery, availability, or policy without searching through multiple tools. If the shopper is ready, the workflow can create a supported draft order or send the checkout link by SMS during the call.
Use a helpful opening
Lead with context and permission rather than pressure. Explain the brand, why you are calling, and give the customer an easy way to end the conversation.
A useful conversation might ask whether anything about the product, delivery, or checkout prevented the purchase. The answer can reveal friction that an automated reminder would never surface.
Avoid presenting an incentive before understanding the objection. A discount cannot fix a sizing question, an unclear delivery date, or a compatibility concern.
Combine people and AI deliberately
Outbound AI agents can work larger segments, answer repeatable questions, and transfer interested shoppers to a person. Human representatives may be the better choice for high-value, technical, VIP, or wholesale conversations.
Both approaches should use the same segment, customer context, approved guidance, SMS tools, and reporting. The choice of caller should not break the campaign workflow.
Attribute revenue to the conversation
Measure more than dials and answer rates. Track connected calls, meaningful conversations, checkout links sent, orders completed, attributed revenue, average order value, and outcomes by campaign and agent.
Review unsuccessful calls too. Repeated objections can improve product pages, shipping communication, pricing, and future campaign selection.
